A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought. It starts with a capital letter and ends with a punctuation mark, such as a full stop (.), question mark (?), or exclamation mark (!). For example, 'UThandi uyathanda ukudlala.' means 'Thandi loves to play.' We will learn how to write sentences correctly and use punctuation to show how we feel or what we mean.
Let’s look at some examples of sentences. 'UJohn uthanda izinja.' (John loves dogs.) is a simple sentence. Notice how it starts with a capital letter and ends with a full stop. If we want to ask a question, we can say, 'Uphi uThandi?' (Where is Thandi?) which ends with a question mark. We will practice writing similar sentences together.
Now, let’s write sentences together. I will say a sentence, and you will repeat it and write it down. For example, I say, 'UThandi udlala ibhola.' (Thandi plays soccer.) You will write it down, making sure to start with a capital letter and end with a full stop. After that, we will check our sentences as a class to see if we used the correct punctuation.
Now it’s your turn to write your own sentences. Think of something you like to do. Write three sentences about it. Remember to start each sentence with a capital letter and end with the correct punctuation. After you finish, share your sentences with a partner and check if they used punctuation correctly.
