Patterns are sequences that repeat in a predictable way. In mathematics, we can find patterns in numbers, shapes, and even colors. For example, a simple pattern could be red, blue, red, blue. We can also create number patterns, such as 2, 4, 6, 8, where each number increases by 2. Recognizing these patterns helps us predict what comes next and lays the foundation for algebraic thinking.
Let's create a number pattern together. Start with the number 5. If we add 3 each time, our pattern will be: 5, 8, 11, 14. Notice how we keep adding 3 to the previous number. If I ask you what comes next, you would say 17 because 14 + 3 = 17. This is how we can build and extend number patterns.
Now, let's practice identifying patterns. I will show you a sequence of shapes: circle, square, circle, square. What comes next? Yes, it's a circle! Let's try another one with numbers: 10, 15, 20, __. What do you think goes in the blank? That's right, 25! You are doing great at recognizing these patterns.
For your independent practice, I want you to create your own number pattern. Start with the number 1 and add 4 each time. Write down the first five numbers in your pattern.
