Measurement is the process of determining the size, length, or amount of something. In our daily lives, we measure things to understand how big or small they are. Common units of measurement include centimeters (cm), meters (m), and liters (L). Today, we will focus on measuring length using centimeters and meters.
Let's say we have a pencil that is 15 cm long. If we want to find out how many centimeters are in 2 pencils, we can add the lengths together: 15 cm + 15 cm = 30 cm. Therefore, 2 pencils together measure 30 cm. We can also use a ruler to measure the length of different objects in the classroom.
Now, let's practice measuring some objects around the classroom. I will give you a ruler, and you will measure the length of your desk in centimeters. Write down the measurement. After that, we will measure a book together. Remember to line up the ruler with the edge of the object to get an accurate measurement.
Now it's your turn to solve some measurement problems on your own. Here are a few questions: 1) If a string is 20 cm long and you cut it in half, how long is each piece? 2) A ribbon is 50 cm long. If you use 10 cm of it, how much ribbon is left? Write down your answers and show your working clearly.
Answer: Centimeters
Centimeters are a unit used to measure length, while kilograms measure weight, liters measure volume, and seconds measure time.
Answer: 30 cm
If one pencil is 10 cm long, then three pencils would be 10 cm + 10 cm + 10 cm = 30 cm.
Answer: 100 cm
There are 100 centimeters in a meter.
Answer: A pencil
A pencil is a small object that can be measured in centimeters, while the other options are larger and may require meters.
Answer: 20 cm
After cutting off 5 cm from 25 cm, the remaining length is 25 cm - 5 cm = 20 cm.
Answer: Choose the right unit
Before measuring, it's important to choose the correct unit of measurement, such as centimeters or meters.
Answer: 60 cm
Two books that are each 30 cm long would have a total length of 30 cm + 30 cm = 60 cm.
Answer: Review and correct it.
If you make a mistake, it's important to review your work and correct it to ensure accuracy.
