Fractions represent parts of a whole. For example, if we have a pizza divided into 4 equal slices and we take 1 slice, we have 1/4 of the pizza. The top number (numerator) shows how many parts we have, and the bottom number (denominator) shows how many equal parts the whole is divided into.
Decimals are another way to represent fractions, especially when we deal with parts smaller than one whole. For instance, 0.5 is the same as 1/2. The number after the decimal point shows how many tenths we have. So, 0.3 means we have 3 tenths.
If we have a chocolate bar divided into 8 pieces and we eat 3 pieces, we can say we have eaten 3/8 of the chocolate bar. We can visualize this by drawing a rectangle and shading in 3 out of 8 equal parts.
If we have 10 marbles and 4 of them are blue, we can express the fraction of blue marbles as 4/10. This can also be written as a decimal: 0.4, meaning 4 out of 10.
Let's look at a circle divided into 6 equal parts. If we shade 2 parts, what fraction do we have? (Answer: 2/6). Now, can someone tell me how we can simplify this fraction? (Answer: 1/3).
If we have 5 out of 10 apples, how can we write this as a decimal? (Answer: 0.5). Let's practice converting other fractions to decimals together.
