A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought. In Sesotho, just like in English, sentences start with a capital letter and end with a punctuation mark. The most common punctuation marks are the full stop (.), question mark (?), and exclamation mark (!). For example, 'Ke rata ho bapala' (I like to play) is a complete sentence. Today, we will learn how to write our own sentences and use punctuation correctly.
Let’s look at some examples. 1. 'Lerato e na le liphoofolo.' (Lerato has animals.) This sentence starts with a capital letter and ends with a full stop. 2. 'O batla ho ja?' (Do you want to eat?) This sentence ends with a question mark because it is asking something. 3. 'Ke thabile!' (I am happy!) This sentence ends with an exclamation mark to show strong feeling. Notice how each sentence is clear and uses punctuation correctly.
Now, let’s create sentences as a class. I will say a word, and you will help me make a sentence. For example, if I say 'ntja' (dog), you might say, 'Ntja ea ka e monate.' (My dog is nice.) Remember to start with a capital letter and end with the correct punctuation. Let’s try with the words 'libuka' (books) and 'bana' (children). What sentence can we create together?
