Good readers use different tones and speeds to express feelings and actions in the text.

Let's read the story 'The Clever Rabbit'. As I read, listen for how I change my voice when the rabbit is happy or scared. Notice the punctuation marks like commas and exclamation points that help us know how to read the sentences. After reading, we will discuss what happened in the story and how the rabbit felt at different times.

Now, I will divide you into small groups. Each group will read a different short text. As you read, practice using different voices for the characters. After your group finishes reading, discuss with each other how you can express the emotions of the characters. I will walk around to listen and help you with any difficult words.

For independent practice, I want you to write three sentences about your favorite animal. Make sure to use correct punctuation at the end of each sentence. After writing, read your sentences aloud to a partner, focusing on how you can express the feelings of the animal you chose. Remember to use your voice to make it exciting!
