A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought. It starts with a capital letter and ends with a punctuation mark. The most common punctuation marks are the full stop (.), question mark (?), and exclamation mark (!). Today, we will learn how to write sentences correctly and use punctuation to show the end of our thoughts.
Let’s look at some examples. 'The cat is sleeping.' This sentence starts with a capital letter and ends with a full stop. Now, if we ask a question, like 'Is the cat sleeping?', we use a question mark at the end. For excitement, we can say, 'The cat is so cute!' which ends with an exclamation mark. Notice how each sentence has a different punctuation mark based on its meaning.
Now, let’s practice writing sentences together. I will say a sentence, and you will help me add the correct punctuation. For example, if I say, 'The dog barks', what punctuation should we use? (Students respond with a full stop.) Great! Let’s try another one: 'Are you coming to play'. What do we need at the end? (Students respond with a question mark.) Excellent! Let’s write a few more sentences as a class.
Now it’s your turn! Write three sentences about your favorite animal. Remember to start each sentence with a capital letter and end with the correct punctuation mark. After you finish, share your sentences with a partner and check if they have the right punctuation. This will help you learn from each other!
