This week, we will review what we have learned in Sesotho this term. We will focus on listening, speaking, reading, and writing. It is important to understand how to form sentences correctly and use punctuation. We will also discuss short texts to help us remember the vocabulary we have learned.
Let’s look at the sentence: 'Ngwana o bapala le metswalle.' (The child is playing with friends.) Notice how we start with a capital letter and end with a full stop. Now, let’s change it to: 'Ngwana o ja borai.' (The child is eating bread.) Again, we use a capital letter at the beginning and a full stop at the end.
In groups, discuss the following questions: 'Ke eng se u se ratang ho se etsa ka letsatsi le lecha?' (What do you like to do on a new day?) and 'U na le metswalle e mefuta efe?' (What types of friends do you have?) Each group will share their answers with the class, practicing their speaking skills and using correct sentence structure.
Now, I want each of you to write three sentences about your favorite animal. Remember to start each sentence with a capital letter and end with a full stop. After writing, read your sentences to a partner and check if they are correct. This will help you practice your writing and reading skills.
Answer: With a capital letter
Every sentence must begin with a capital letter to indicate the start of a new thought.
Answer: Example: 'Ke rata borai.' (I like bread.)
Students should write a complete sentence that reflects their preference.
Answer: Full stop
A full stop is used to indicate the end of a declarative sentence.
Answer: Example: 'Re bapala le metswalle.' (We play with friends.)
Students should express an activity they enjoy doing with friends.
Answer: Ngwana o ja borai.
This sentence is correct as it starts with a capital letter and ends with a full stop.
Answer: Example: 'Ke rata ntja.' (I like dogs.)
Students should name an animal they like, demonstrating their vocabulary.
