Today, we will focus on the sounds of letters and how they combine to form words. For example, the sound 'b' can combine with 'a' to make 'ba'. We will practice identifying these sounds in words and using them to create new words.
Let's look at the word 'ntate' which means 'father'. If we change the first sound 'n' to 'm', we get 'mtate', which is not a real word. However, if we change 't' to 's', we get 'nsate', which means 'to sit'. This shows how changing one sound can create a different word. We will practice this with other words today.
Now, let's work together to build some words. I will say a sound, and you will help me create a word. For example, if I say 'm', what word can we make if we add 'a' and 't'? Yes! 'mat'. Now, let's try with 's' and 'o'. What word do we get? Great! 'so'. Keep thinking of new combinations as we go along.
For your independent practice, I want you to write three sentences using the words we built together. Remember to use correct punctuation. For example, if you wrote 'Mat is big', make sure to start with a capital letter and end with a full stop. After writing, read your sentences to a partner and check if they understand your meaning.
