A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought. In Setswana, just like in English, sentences begin with a capital letter and end with a punctuation mark. The most common punctuation marks are the full stop (.), question mark (?), and exclamation mark (!). Today, we will learn how to write sentences correctly and use punctuation to show the end of our thoughts.
Let’s look at some examples: 'Ke rata go bala.' (I like to read.) This sentence starts with a capital letter and ends with a full stop. Another example is 'O kae?' (Where are you?) which ends with a question mark. Notice how the punctuation changes the meaning of the sentence. We will practice writing our own sentences using these structures.
Now, let’s write a sentence together. I will say a sentence, and you will help me write it on the board. For example, 'Mma o a ja.' (Mother is eating.) What punctuation should we use at the end? Yes, a full stop! Let’s write it down together. After that, I will ask you to come up with your own sentences, and we will check them for punctuation.
For independent practice, I want you to write three sentences about your favorite animal. Make sure to start each sentence with a capital letter and end with the correct punctuation.
