A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought. It starts with a capital letter and ends with a punctuation mark, such as a full stop (.), question mark (?), or exclamation mark (!). For example, 'The cat is sleeping.' is a complete sentence. Today, we will learn how to write our own sentences and use punctuation correctly.
Let’s look at some examples together. If I say, 'The dog barks', I can turn this into a question by adding a question mark: 'Does the dog bark?'. Another example is, 'I love ice cream!' which shows excitement with an exclamation mark. Notice how the first word is capitalized, and the punctuation at the end changes the meaning of the sentence.
Now, let’s practice together. I will give you a set of words: 'play', 'the', 'children', 'are'. Can anyone help me form a complete sentence? (Wait for responses). Great! We can say, 'The children are playing.' Now, let’s add a full stop at the end. Let’s try another one with the words: 'is', 'the', 'sun', 'shining'. What sentence can we create? (Encourage students to respond and guide them to the correct sentence structure.)
