Tshivenda First Additional Language - Term 1 - Week 2

Phonics is the method of teaching reading and writing by developing learners' phonemic awareness. In Tshivenda, we will focus on the sounds of letters and how they combine to form words. For example, the sound 'm' can be found in words like 'muthu' (person) and 'mavhili' (two). Understanding these sounds will help us read and write better.

Let's take the sound 'a' and combine it with different consonants to form words. For instance, if we add 'b' to 'a', we get 'ba' (to come). If we add 't', we get 'ta' (to go). We can practice by writing these words on the board and saying them out loud together.

Now, let's create sentences using the words we built. For example, using 'muthu', we can say 'Muthu u khou bva' (The person is coming). I will write the sentence on the board, and we will discuss the punctuation. Remember, every sentence starts with a capital letter and ends with a full stop.

For independent practice, each learner will receive a worksheet with a list of phonetic sounds. They will need to create at least five words from the sounds and then write a sentence for each word. Encourage them to use correct punctuation and spacing. After completing the task, they will share their sentences with a partner.
