A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought. It starts with a capital letter and ends with a punctuation mark, such as a full stop (.), question mark (?), or exclamation mark (!). Punctuation helps us understand how to read sentences correctly. For example, 'I love Xitsonga!' shows excitement, while 'Do you like Xitsonga?' asks a question.
Let’s look at some examples of sentences: 'The sun is shining.' This sentence tells us something. Notice the capital letter at the beginning and the full stop at the end. Another example is 'What a beautiful day!' This sentence expresses a feeling and ends with an exclamation mark. We can also ask questions, like 'Where are you going?' which ends with a question mark.
Now, let’s create sentences as a class. I will say a word, and you will help me form a sentence. For example, if I say 'cat', you might say, 'The cat is sleeping.' Let’s write it on the board together. Remember to start with a capital letter and end with a full stop. After we write it, we will read it aloud together to practice our speaking skills.
