A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought. It starts with a capital letter and ends with a punctuation mark. The most common punctuation marks are periods (.), question marks (?), and exclamation marks (!). Today, we will learn how to write sentences correctly and use punctuation to show the end of our thoughts.
Let’s look at some examples. 'The cat is sleeping.' is a complete sentence that ends with a period. 'Are you coming to the party?' is a question and ends with a question mark. 'Wow, that’s amazing!' shows excitement and ends with an exclamation mark. Notice how each sentence starts with a capital letter and ends with the correct punctuation.
Now, let’s practice together. I will say a sentence, and you will help me write it on the board. For example, if I say, 'The dog barks loudly,' you will write it down, making sure to start with a capital letter and end with a period. After we write it, we will discuss what kind of sentence it is and why we used that punctuation.
For your independent practice, I want you to write three sentences about your favorite animal. Remember to start each sentence with a capital letter and end with the correct punctuation. After you finish writing, share your sentences with a partner and check each other’s work for correct punctuation.
