Today, we will explore new words that we can use in our speaking and writing. Vocabulary is important because it helps us express our ideas clearly. We will look at some short texts and identify new words. I will read a short story, and as I read, listen carefully for any words you do not know. We will discuss these words together.
Let’s look at the sentence: 'The cat sat on the mat.' Here, we have a subject (the cat), a verb (sat), and a prepositional phrase (on the mat). Notice how we use spaces between words and a period at the end. Now, let’s change the sentence to: 'The dog jumped over the fence.' We will identify the subject, verb, and any new vocabulary together.
In groups, you will receive a short text. Your task is to find and underline any new words. After that, each group will share their words with the class. We will discuss the meanings of these words and how they can be used in sentences. Remember to think about punctuation as you write your sentences using the new vocabulary.
Now it’s your turn! Write five sentences using at least three new words from our vocabulary hunt. Make sure to use correct punctuation and spacing. After you finish, read your sentences to a partner. They will check for punctuation and help you with any words you might have missed.
