Phonics is the method of teaching reading and writing by developing learners' phonemic awareness. Today, we will focus on the sounds of letters and how they combine to form words. Let’s take the sounds /m/, /a/, and /t/. When we combine these sounds, we form the word 'mat'. Now, if we change the /m/ to /c/, we get 'cat'. This shows how changing one sound can create a new word. We will practice this with more examples, such as /s/, /u/, and /n/ to form 'sun'.

Now that we have built some words, let’s use them in sentences. For example, 'The cat sits on the mat.' I will write this on the board. Let’s identify the words and discuss their meanings. Then, I will ask you to create your own sentences using the words we built. Remember to use correct punctuation at the end of your sentences.

For your independent practice, I want you to choose five words we have learned today. Write each word in a sentence. Make sure to check your sentences for correct punctuation and spacing. After you finish, share your sentences with a partner and discuss the meanings of the words you used.
