Phonics is the relationship between sounds and their spellings. In isiNdebele, we will focus on the sounds of letters and how they combine to form words. For example, the sound 'b' can be found in the word 'baba' (father). Understanding these sounds helps us read and write better.
Let’s take the sounds 'm', 'a', and 't'. When we combine these sounds, we can form the word 'mat'. We can also change the vowel sound to create new words, like 'met' or 'mot'. This shows how changing one sound can create different words. Let’s practice this with other sounds.
Now, let’s work together to create sentences using the words we built. For example, if we have the words 'baba' and 'bona' (see), we can make the sentence 'Baba bona umntwana' (Father sees the child). I will write it on the board, and you will help me with punctuation and spacing. Remember, every sentence starts with a capital letter and ends with a full stop.
For your independent practice, I want you to choose three sounds from the list I provide: 's', 'a', 't', 'k', 'u'. Build at least three words using these sounds. Then, write a sentence for each word you created. Don’t forget to check your punctuation and spacing before you hand in your work.
