A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought. It starts with a capital letter and ends with a punctuation mark, such as a full stop (.), question mark (?), or exclamation mark (!). For example, 'I love reading books.' is a complete sentence. Today, we will learn how to write our own sentences and use punctuation correctly.
Let's look at some examples together. 'The cat is sleeping.' is a simple sentence. Notice how it starts with a capital letter and ends with a full stop. Now, if we want to ask a question, we can say, 'Is the cat sleeping?' This sentence ends with a question mark. Lastly, if we want to express excitement, we can say, 'What a beautiful cat!' which ends with an exclamation mark.
Now, let's create sentences as a class. I will give you a word, and you will help me form a sentence. For example, if I say 'dog', you might say, 'The dog is barking.' Remember to use a capital letter at the beginning and a full stop at the end. After we create a few sentences together, I will ask you to identify the punctuation marks we used.
It's your turn to write! I want you to think of your favorite animal. Write three sentences about it. Make sure each sentence starts with a capital letter and ends with the correct punctuation. Once you finish, share your sentences with a partner and check if they used punctuation correctly.
