A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought. It starts with a capital letter and ends with a punctuation mark, such as a full stop (.), question mark (?), or exclamation mark (!). For example, 'UThandiwe uthanda ukufunda.' is a complete sentence. Today, we will learn how to write our own sentences and use punctuation correctly.
Let's look at some examples together. 'Ibhola iyindlala.' is a simple sentence. Notice how it starts with a capital letter and ends with a full stop. Now, if we want to ask a question, we can say, 'Uphi uThandiwe?' This sentence ends with a question mark. Lastly, if we want to express excitement, we can say, 'Ngiyajabula!' which ends with an exclamation mark. Each of these sentences conveys a different message.
Now, let's create some sentences as a class. I will give you a word, and you will help me form a complete sentence. For example, if I say 'ikati' (cat), you might say, 'Ikati liyadlala.' (The cat is playing.) Remember to start with a capital letter and end with the correct punctuation. Let's try a few more words together, such as 'umntwana' (child) and 'umsebenzi' (work).
