A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought. In isiZulu, just like in English, we use punctuation marks to help us understand the meaning of sentences. The most common punctuation marks are the full stop (.), question mark (?), and exclamation mark (!). A full stop is used at the end of a statement, a question mark is used at the end of a question, and an exclamation mark shows excitement or strong feelings.
Let's look at some examples of sentences. 'Ngiyathanda ukudlala.' (I love to play.) This sentence ends with a full stop. 'Uphi umngane wakho?' (Where is your friend?) This sentence ends with a question mark. 'Ngiyajabula!' (I am happy!) This sentence ends with an exclamation mark. Notice how the punctuation changes the meaning of the sentences.
Now, let's create sentences together. I will say a word, and you will help me form a sentence. For example, if I say 'ibhola' (ball), you might say, 'Ngiyadlala ibhola.' (I am playing with the ball.) Remember to add the correct punctuation at the end of your sentence. Let's try another word: 'umfana' (boy). What sentence can we create?
