Phonics is the relationship between sounds and their spellings. In isiZulu, understanding phonics helps us read and write better. Today, we will focus on the sounds of letters and how they combine to form words. For example, the sound 'b' can be found in words like 'baba' (father) and 'buka' (look).
Let’s look at the phonetic sounds 'm', 'a', and 't'. When we combine these sounds, we can create the word 'mat' (mat). We can also change the first sound to 's' to create 'sat' (sat). This shows how changing one sound can create a new word. Let’s practice this with other sounds.
Now, let’s work together to create sentences using the words we built. For example, if we have the words 'baba' and 'buka', we can form the sentence 'Baba buka!' (Father, look!). I will write it on the board, and you can help me with the punctuation. Remember, every sentence starts with a capital letter and ends with a full stop.
For your independent practice, I want you to create your own words using the sounds 's', 'a', and 'b'. Write down at least three words. Then, use two of those words to write a sentence. Don’t forget to check your punctuation and spacing before sharing with a partner.
