A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought. It starts with a capital letter and ends with a punctuation mark, such as a full stop (.), question mark (?), or exclamation mark (!). For example, 'UJohn uyafunda.' (John is studying.) is a complete sentence. Today, we will learn how to write our own sentences and use punctuation correctly.
Let’s look at some examples. 'UThandi uthanda ukudlala.' (Thandi loves to play.) is a simple sentence. Notice how it starts with a capital letter and ends with a full stop. Now, if we want to ask a question, we can say, 'UThandi uthanda ukudlala?' (Does Thandi love to play?) Here, we use a question mark. Let’s practice identifying the punctuation in these sentences together.
Now, let’s work together to create sentences. I will give you a subject, and you will help me form a sentence. For example, if I say 'Umlingo' (the magician), you might say, 'Umlingo uyakhanga.' (The magician is amazing.) Remember to start with a capital letter and end with the correct punctuation. Let’s try a few more subjects and build sentences as a class.
