Punctuation helps us understand how to read sentences correctly. For example, 'Ngiyathanda ukudlala.' (I love to play.) is a complete sentence. Today, we will learn how to write our own sentences and use punctuation correctly.
Let's look at some examples of sentences. 'UThandi uthanda izinja.' (Thandi loves dogs.) is a simple sentence. Notice how it starts with a capital letter and ends with a full stop. If we ask a question, like 'Uphi uThandi?' (Where is Thandi?), it ends with a question mark. Lastly, if we express excitement, like 'Ngiyajabula!' (I am happy!), we use an exclamation mark. These examples show how punctuation changes the meaning of sentences.
Now, let’s practice writing sentences together. I will say a sentence, and you will help me write it on the board. For example, if I say, 'I see a cat,' we will write it as 'Ngiyabona ikati.'
