A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought. It starts with a capital letter and ends with a punctuation mark, such as a full stop (.), question mark (?), or exclamation mark (!). For example, 'I love isiZulu!' is a complete sentence. Today, we will learn how to write our own sentences and use punctuation correctly.
Let’s look at some examples. 'The dog is barking.' This sentence tells us what the dog is doing and ends with a full stop. 'Are you coming to the party?' This is a question, so it ends with a question mark. Lastly, 'Wow, that is amazing!' shows excitement and ends with an exclamation mark. Notice how each sentence starts with a capital letter and ends with the correct punctuation.
Now, let’s create sentences together. I will say a word, and you will help me form a sentence. For example, if I say 'cat', you might say, 'The cat is sleeping.' Let’s try another one with 'school'. What sentence can we make? Remember to start with a capital letter and think about what punctuation we should use at the end.
Now it’s your turn! Write three sentences about your favorite animal. Make sure to start each sentence with a capital letter and end with the correct punctuation. After you finish, read your sentences to a partner and check if they have the right punctuation and spacing.
