For example, the sequence 2, 4, 6, 8 is a pattern where each number increases by 2. We can also create patterns using shapes, like a circle, square, circle, square. Recognizing these patterns helps us predict what comes next and is a foundational skill in algebra.
Let's create a number pattern together. Start with the number 5 and add 3 each time. The pattern will look like this: 5, 8, 11, 14, 17. Notice how we keep adding 3. Now, if I ask you what the next number is, you can confidently say it is 20 because we continue the pattern by adding 3 again. This is how we can use patterns to solve problems.
Now, let's practice identifying patterns. I will show you a sequence of shapes: triangle, triangle, square, triangle, triangle, square. What comes next? Discuss with your partner.
