Measurement is the process of determining the size, length, weight, or capacity of an object. In this lesson, we will focus on three main types of measurement: length, weight, and capacity. Length can be measured in centimeters (cm) or meters (m), weight in grams (g) or kilograms (kg), and capacity in liters (L) or milliliters (mL). Understanding these units helps us compare and understand the world around us.
Let's measure the length of a pencil. If the pencil is 15 cm long, we can write this as: Length of pencil = 15 cm. If we have another pencil that is 20 cm long, we can compare the two. The first pencil is shorter than the second pencil. This comparison helps us understand the concept of measurement in a practical way.
Now, let's practice measuring weight. I have a bag of flour that weighs 500 grams. How can we express this weight? We can say: Weight of flour = 500 g. Let's think about how much that is compared to a bag that weighs 1 kilogram (1000 g). How many grams are in 1 kilogram? That's right, 1000 grams! So, the bag of flour is less than 1 kilogram.
For your independent practice, I want you to measure the capacity of different containers at home. Use a measuring cup to find out how many milliliters each container holds. Write down your findings. For example, if a cup holds 250 mL, write: Capacity of cup = 250 mL. After measuring, compare the capacities of two containers and write which one holds more.
Answer: Centimeters
Centimeters are the appropriate unit for measuring short lengths like a pencil.
Answer: 1000 g
1 kilogram is equal to 1000 grams.
Answer: Liters
Liters are used to measure the capacity of liquids in bottles.
Answer: 1000 grams
4 boxes weighing 250 grams each would total 1000 grams (250 g x 4 = 1000 g).
Answer: Grams
Grams are the best unit for measuring the weight of small items like an apple.
Answer: 2000 milliliters
2 liters is equal to 2000 milliliters (1 liter = 1000 mL).
Answer: Centimeters
Centimeters are a unit of length used to measure distance.
Answer: 0.5 liters
500 mL is equal to 0.5 liters (1000 mL = 1 L).
