A place of worship is a building or space where people gather to practice their religion. Different religions have different types of places of worship. For example, Christians go to churches, Muslims go to mosques, Jews go to synagogues, and Hindus go to temples. Each of these places has unique features and serves as a community hub for followers.
Let's look at a few examples of places of worship. A church often has a steeple and may have stained glass windows. In contrast, a mosque features a dome and a minaret. A synagogue usually has a Star of David and is often decorated with Hebrew texts. A Hindu temple is adorned with colorful statues of deities. By observing these features, we can learn more about the beliefs and practices of each religion.
Now, let's work together to identify features of different places of worship. I will show you pictures of a church, a mosque, a synagogue, and a temple. As a class, we will discuss what we see in each picture. What colors are used? What symbols can you find? How do you think these features help the community practice their faith?
For your independent practice, I want you to design your own place of worship. Think about what religion it represents and what features it would have. Draw a picture and label the important parts. Write a few sentences explaining why these features are important for the community that would use this place.
