A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought. It starts with a capital letter and ends with a punctuation mark, such as a period (.), question mark (?), or exclamation mark (!). Punctuation is important because it helps us understand the meaning of sentences. For example, 'I like apples.' is a statement, while 'Do you like apples?' is a question. Today, we will learn how to write sentences correctly and use punctuation marks.
Let's look at some examples. 'The cat is sleeping.' is a complete sentence. Notice the capital 'T' at the beginning and the period at the end. Now, if I say, 'What is your name?', it is a question, so we use a question mark. Lastly, 'Wow! That is amazing!' shows excitement and ends with an exclamation mark. Each of these sentences has proper punctuation and spacing.
Now, let's practice together. I will say a sentence, and you will help me write it on the board. For example, I say, 'The dog barks.' What do we need at the beginning? (Students respond: Capital letter!) And what do we need at the end? (Students respond: Period!) Great! Let's write it together: 'The dog barks.' Now, let's try another one: 'Are you coming to the party?' What punctuation do we use here? (Students respond: Question mark!) Excellent!
