siSwati First Additional Language - Term 1 - Week 7

Reading fluency is the ability to read a text smoothly and with expression. This week, we will focus on reading short stories in siSwati. We will discuss how to read with the right tone and pace, making our reading more enjoyable and understandable. Good readers use punctuation marks to guide their expression, so we will pay special attention to these as we read.

Let’s read a short story together. The story is about a little bird that learns to fly. As we read, I will model how to use expression. For example, when the bird is excited, I will read with a happy tone. When the bird is scared, I will read with a shaky voice. Pay attention to how I pause at commas and stop at full stops. After reading, we will discuss how the bird felt at different points in the story.

Now, it’s your turn! In small groups, choose a short text from our reading corner. Each student will take turns reading a paragraph aloud. Remember to use expression and pay attention to punctuation. After each group finishes, we will come together and share what we liked about each other's reading. I will ask questions to help you reflect on the story and your reading style.

For independent practice, write three sentences about your favorite animal. Use correct punctuation and make sure your sentences are clear. After writing, read your sentences aloud to a partner, using expression. Think about how you can make your sentences exciting to listen to. Once you finish, we will share some of our sentences with the class.
