Grammar is the set of rules that helps us form sentences correctly. In Tshivenda, just like in any language, we need to use punctuation marks such as full stops, commas, and question marks to make our writing clear. For example, a sentence should start with a capital letter and end with a full stop. Today, we will learn how to spot mistakes in sentences and how to fix them.
Let’s look at this sentence: 'ndivhula u tshi khou bva.' (I am going out.) It is correct, but if we change it to 'ndivhula u tshi khou bva' without a full stop, it becomes unclear. We can correct it by adding a full stop at the end: 'ndivhula u tshi khou bva.' Now it is a complete sentence. Another example is 'na u shuma' (and you work). If we want to ask a question, we should write it as 'Na u shuma?' with a question mark.
In groups, you will receive a list of sentences that contain errors. Your task is to read each sentence aloud and discuss what is wrong with it. For example, if you see 'ndivhula u tshi khou bva' without punctuation, discuss why it needs a full stop. After discussing, write the corrected version on the board. This will help you practice speaking and listening while also improving your writing skills.
Now it’s your turn to write! Write five sentences about your favorite animal. Make sure to use correct punctuation and spacing. For example, if you write 'Ndi muvhili,' (It is a lion) remember to start with a capital letter and end with a full stop. Once you finish, exchange your work with a partner and check each other’s sentences for any mistakes. This will help you learn from each other.
