A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought. It starts with a capital letter and ends with a punctuation mark, such as a full stop (.), question mark (?), or exclamation mark (!). For example, 'I love Tshivenda.' is a complete sentence. Today, we will learn how to write our own sentences and use punctuation correctly.
Let's look at some examples together. 'The sun is shining.' is a simple sentence. Notice how it starts with a capital letter and ends with a full stop. Now, if I ask, 'Is the sun shining?', this is a question and ends with a question mark. Lastly, 'Wow! What a beautiful day!' shows excitement and ends with an exclamation mark. Each sentence has a different purpose and punctuation.
Now, let's create sentences as a class. I will give you a word, and you will help me form a sentence. For example, if I say 'dog', you might say, 'The dog is barking.' Remember to use a capital letter at the beginning and a full stop at the end. After we create a few sentences together, I will ask you to identify the punctuation used in each sentence.
