Phonics is the relationship between sounds and their written symbols. In Tshivenda, we have unique sounds that correspond to letters. Today, we will focus on the sounds of the letters 'b', 'd', and 'm'. We will practice saying these sounds and identifying words that start with these letters. For example, 'b' in 'bana' (children), 'd' in 'danga' (to play), and 'm' in 'mukoma' (brother).
Let's build some words together! If we take the sound 'b', we can create the word 'bana'. Now, let's add a vowel to make it 'bana' (children). Next, using 'd', we can form 'danga' (to play). Finally, with 'm', we can create 'mukoma' (brother). Notice how each word starts with a different letter but follows the same pattern of adding vowels.
Now, let's work together to create sentences using the words we built. For example, we can say, 'Bana vha danga.' (The children are playing.) I will write this on the board. Let's identify the punctuation at the end of the sentence. What do we use? Yes, a full stop! Now, I want you to create your own sentence using 'mukoma'.
For your independent practice, I want you to choose one of the letters we discussed: 'b', 'd', or 'm'. Write down three words that start with that letter. Then, use one of those words to write a complete sentence. Remember to use correct punctuation. After you finish, share your sentences with a partner and read them aloud.
