Reflection is the process of thinking about what we have done, how we did it, and what we can learn from it. In Creative Arts, reflection helps us improve our skills and understand our creative choices. Assessment, on the other hand, is how we evaluate our work and the work of others. It involves looking at the strengths and areas for improvement in our art. Together, reflection and assessment help us grow as artists.
For instance, after completing a painting, an artist might reflect on their use of colors and techniques. They might ask themselves questions like, 'What colors worked well together?' or 'How did I feel while painting this piece?' In terms of assessment, they could ask a peer for feedback, considering what they liked about the painting and what could be improved. This process helps both the artist and the peer learn and develop their skills.
As a class, we will discuss a recent art project we completed. Each student will share one thing they liked about their work and one thing they would change if they could do it again. This will help us practice reflecting on our own art. We will also create a list of vocabulary words related to reflection and assessment, such as 'feedback', 'improvement', 'technique', and 'evaluation'.
Students will choose one of their previous art projects and write a short reflection. They should answer the following questions: What did I enjoy about this project? What challenges did I face? What would I do differently next time? After writing their reflection, they will assess their work by creating a simple rubric with categories like creativity, effort, and technique. Finally, they will share their reflections and assessments with a partner.
