Reflection is the process of thinking about what we have done, what we have learned, and how we can improve. In creative arts, reflection helps us to evaluate our work and understand our creative choices. Assessment, on the other hand, is the way we measure our progress and skills. It can be formal, like a test, or informal, like sharing our work with others and receiving feedback. Together, reflection and assessment help us grow as artists.
Imagine you just finished a painting. To reflect, you might ask yourself questions like: What do I like about my painting? What would I change if I could? This helps you to think critically about your work and identify areas for improvement. For instance, if you feel the colors are too dark, you can plan to use brighter colors next time.
As a class, we will discuss different ways to assess our artwork. Think about how you feel when someone gives you feedback. Is it helpful? Why or why not? We will create a list of positive and constructive feedback examples. This will help us understand how to assess our own work and the work of our peers in a supportive way.
For your mini-project, create a simple piece of art using any medium you like (drawing, painting, collage, etc.). After completing your artwork, write a short reflection that answers the following questions: What inspired your artwork? What techniques did you use? What do you like most about it? What would you do differently next time? Be prepared to share your artwork and reflection with the class.
