A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought. It begins with a capital letter and ends with a punctuation mark, such as a period, question mark, or exclamation mark. Punctuation is important because it helps us understand the meaning of sentences. For example, 'Let's eat, Grandma!' means something very different from 'Let's eat Grandma!' The first sentence invites Grandma to eat, while the second suggests something quite alarming!
Let's look at some examples. 'The cat is sleeping.' is a simple sentence that ends with a period. 'What time is it?' is a question and ends with a question mark. 'Wow, that was amazing!' shows excitement and ends with an exclamation mark. Notice how the punctuation changes the tone and meaning of each sentence.
Now, let's practice together. I will read a few sentences aloud, and I want you to listen carefully. After each sentence, raise your hand to tell me what punctuation mark should be at the end. For example, if I say, 'Are you coming to the party,' you should respond with 'Question mark!' Let's do a few more together.
