For example, the sound 'b' in 'baba' is represented by the letter 'b'. Today, we will explore how different sounds can form new words and how to use them in sentences.
Let's take the root word 'bala' which means 'to read'. By adding different prefixes and suffixes, we can create new words: 'ubala' (you read), 'balinga' (they read). Notice how the meaning changes with the addition of different parts. This shows how powerful word building can be in isiNdebele.
In groups, I will give you a list of root words. Your task is to create as many new words as possible using prefixes and suffixes. For example, if the root word is 'thanda' (to love), you could create 'uthanda' (you love) or 'thandana' (love each other). After 10 minutes, we will share our words with the class.
Now, using the words you created in the group activity, write three sentences. Make sure to use correct punctuation and spacing. For example, 'Uthanda ukufunda.' (You love to read.) After writing, pair up with a partner and read your sentences to each other.
