Phonics is the relationship between sounds and their spellings. In isiXhosa, understanding phonics helps us read and write more effectively. Today, we will focus on the sounds of letters and how they combine to form words. We will also explore how adding prefixes and suffixes can change the meaning of words.
Let’s take the root word 'thanda' which means 'love'. By adding the prefix 'u-' we get 'uthanda' meaning 'he/she loves'. If we add the suffix '-a' to 'thanda', we can create 'thandaza' which means 'to love'. Notice how the meaning changes with different prefixes and suffixes.
Now, let’s work together. I will say a root word, and you will help me build new words by adding prefixes or suffixes. For example, if I say 'bala' (to read), what can we add to make it 'reader'? (Students will respond with 'umfundi' for 'reader'). Let’s continue with more root words and see how many new words we can create together.
For your independent practice, I want you to write three sentences using the words we built today. Make sure to use correct punctuation and spacing. After writing, read your sentences to a partner and discuss what they mean. This will help you practice your speaking skills as well.
