In isiXhosa, grammar is essential for clear communication. Punctuation marks like full stops, commas, and question marks help us understand the meaning of sentences. For example, a full stop indicates the end of a statement, while a question mark shows that a sentence is asking something. Today, we will explore how to use these punctuation marks correctly in our writing.
Let's look at the following sentence: 'uThandi uthanda ukudlala'. This sentence is correct, but it lacks punctuation. We can correct it by adding a full stop at the end: 'uThandi uthanda ukudlala.' Now it is clear that this is a complete thought. Another example is: 'uMpho uthanda iincwadi' which can be corrected to 'uMpho uthanda iincwadi.' Notice how punctuation changes the clarity of our sentences.
In groups, you will be given a list of words. Your task is to create sentences using these words, ensuring that you use correct punctuation. For example, if your words are 'umfana', 'ujolisa', and 'umsebenzi', you might write: 'Umfana ujolisa umsebenzi.' After writing your sentences, share them with the class and discuss the punctuation used.
Now, you will work individually on an editing exercise. I will provide you with a short paragraph that contains several grammatical errors and missing punctuation. Your job is to read the paragraph carefully, identify the errors, and rewrite it correctly. Pay attention to the use of full stops, commas, and question marks. Once you finish, we will review your corrections as a class.
