Every sentence must start with a capital letter and end with a punctuation mark, such as a full stop (.), question mark (?), or exclamation mark (!). Punctuation helps us understand the meaning of sentences and indicates pauses or emotions. For example, 'I love isiXhosa!' shows excitement, while 'Do you like isiXhosa?' asks a question.
Let’s look at some examples: 'The cat is sleeping.' This sentence starts with a capital letter and ends with a full stop. 'What is your name?' This is a question, so it ends with a question mark. 'Wow, that’s amazing!' This shows excitement and ends with an exclamation mark. Notice how each sentence conveys a different meaning based on the punctuation used.
Now, let’s create sentences as a class. I will say a word, and you will help me form a complete sentence. For example, if I say 'dog', you might say, 'The dog is barking.' Remember to start with a capital letter and end with the correct punctuation. Let’s try another word: 'school'. What sentence can we create?
