Let's take the word 'umuntu' (person). We can break it down into sounds: u-m-u-n-t-u. Notice how each letter contributes to the sound of the word. Now, let's try to build new words using the same sounds. For example, if we change 'u' to 'i', we get 'imuntu' (people).

I will say a few words, and you will repeat them after me. Then, we will identify the first sound in each word. For example, if I say 'izinkanyezi' (stars), what is the first sound? (Students respond: 'i'). Let's do this with five more words together.

Now, it's your turn to create sentences. Using the words we practiced, write three sentences about your family. Remember to use correct punctuation and spacing. For example, 'Udadewethu ubhalela incwadi' (My sister is writing a letter). After writing, share your sentences with a partner.
