Let's look at a rectangle. A rectangle has two pairs of equal sides. If we have a shape with sides measuring 4 cm and 6 cm, we can confirm it is a rectangle because it has opposite sides that are equal. To visualize this, draw a rectangle on the board and label its sides. Now, letβs count the angles: how many right angles does it have? Yes, four! This is a key property of rectangles.
In pairs, students will go on a 'shape hunt' around the classroom. Each pair will find and list at least five different shapes they can see, describing their properties. For example, they might find a circular clock, a rectangular window, or a triangular piece of art. After 10 minutes, we will regroup and share our findings, discussing the properties of each shape we discovered.
Students will complete a worksheet that includes various tasks: identifying shapes from pictures, matching shapes to their properties, and solving simple problems involving perimeter. For example, one question might ask, 'If a square has a side length of 5 cm, what is its perimeter?' Students will show their working clearly to demonstrate their understanding.
