Measurement is a way to quantify the size, length, weight, or volume of an object. In this lesson, we will focus on common units of measurement such as meters for length, liters for volume, and kilograms for weight. It is important to understand how to choose the appropriate unit based on what we are measuring. For example, we use meters to measure the height of a person, while liters are used to measure the capacity of a bottle.
Let's say we want to measure the length of a pencil. We can use a ruler marked in centimeters. If the pencil measures 15 centimeters, we write this as 15 cm. If we have a longer object, like a table, we might measure it in meters. For instance, if the table is 1.5 meters long, we write this as 1.5 m. This shows how different objects require different units of measurement.
Now, let's practice measuring some objects around the classroom. I will divide you into small groups and give each group a ruler and a measuring tape. Your task is to measure the length of three different objects: a book, a desk, and a whiteboard. Record your measurements in centimeters and meters. After measuring, we will discuss which unit was most appropriate for each object and why.
For your independent practice, I want you to solve the following problems on your own. 1) If a bottle holds 2 liters of water, how many milliliters is that? 2) A rope is 3 meters long. How many centimeters is that? 3) If a bag of flour weighs 1.5 kilograms, how many grams is that? Show your working clearly for each problem and be prepared to share your answers with the class.
Answer: Centimeters
Centimeters are commonly used to measure shorter lengths like that of a pencil.
Answer: 1000
There are 1000 milliliters in 1 liter.
Answer: 250
To convert meters to centimeters, multiply by 100. So, 2.5 m x 100 = 250 cm.
Answer: Grams
Grams are a unit of measurement used to quantify weight.
Answer: 1.5
To convert grams to kilograms, divide by 1000. So, 1500 g Γ· 1000 = 1.5 kg.
Answer: Cubic meters
Cubic meters are suitable for measuring larger volumes like that of a swimming pool.
Answer: 300
There are 100 centimeters in a meter, so 3 m x 100 = 300 cm.
Answer: 1500
1 liter equals 1000 milliliters, so 1.5 liters equals 1500 milliliters.
