Non-living things, on the other hand, do not possess these characteristics. They can be natural, like rocks and water, or man-made, like toys and buildings. Understanding the differences between these two categories helps us appreciate the world around us.
Let's look at some examples together. A dog is a living thing because it eats, grows, and can reproduce. A chair is a non-living thing because it does not grow or respond to its environment. As a class, we can list more examples and categorize them into living and non-living.
In groups, students will discuss various items they see in the classroom or outside. Each group will create a list of at least five living things and five non-living things. Afterward, each group will share their lists with the class, and we will discuss any disagreements or interesting findings.
Students will create a poster that illustrates examples of living and non-living things. They should include at least three examples of each, along with a brief description of why they categorized them as such.
