Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. Everything around us is made of matter, including solids, liquids, and gases. For example, a rock is a solid, water is a liquid, and air is a gas. Understanding the different states of matter helps us learn how they interact and change.
A mixture is made up of two or more substances that are combined but not chemically bonded. This means that each substance in a mixture retains its own properties. For instance, when you mix sand and salt, you can still see the individual grains of sand and salt. Mixtures can be homogeneous, where the components are evenly distributed, or heterogeneous, where they are not.
Let's look at some examples of mixtures. If we take a bowl of cereal and milk, we can see that the cereal floats on top of the milk, making it a heterogeneous mixture. On the other hand, if we mix sugar into water, it dissolves completely, creating a homogeneous mixture. Discuss with your partner: Can you think of other examples of mixtures in your home?
In groups, you will create your own mixtures using provided materials like sand, salt, water, and small beads. Observe how the materials interact. Are they homogeneous or heterogeneous? Write down your observations and share them with the class. Use vocabulary words like 'dissolve', 'suspend', and 'separate' in your descriptions.
For your mini-project, choose two or three materials to create your own mixture. Document the process by taking pictures and writing a short paragraph explaining what you did. Include whether your mixture is homogeneous or heterogeneous and why. Present your project to the class next week.
