Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. Everything around us is made of matter, including solids, liquids, and gases. For example, a rock is a solid, water is a liquid, and air is a gas. Matter can be classified into pure substances, which have a uniform composition, and mixtures, which consist of two or more substances that are not chemically combined.
Mixtures can be either homogeneous or heterogeneous. A homogeneous mixture has a uniform composition throughout, like saltwater, where you cannot see the individual particles of salt. A heterogeneous mixture has distinct parts that you can see, like a salad, where you can identify the different ingredients. Understanding these differences helps us categorize the materials we encounter in our daily lives.
Let's look at some examples. If I have a glass of orange juice, is it a pure substance or a mixture? It is a mixture because it contains water, sugar, and other components. Now, if I have a piece of gold, is it a mixture? No, it is a pure substance because it consists only of gold atoms. Discuss with your partner and identify whether the following items are matter, pure substances, or mixtures: ice cream, air, and a marble.
In groups, discuss the different types of mixtures you encounter at home. Each group will list at least three examples of homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures. After 10 minutes, we will come together as a class and share our findings. Be prepared to explain why you classified each example as you did. This will help us build our vocabulary and understanding of the topic.
For this project, you will create your own mixture using common household items. Choose at least three different materials (e.g., sand, salt, rice, or beads) and combine them in a clear container. Label your mixture and write a short paragraph explaining what types of matter are present and whether it is a homogeneous or heterogeneous mixture. Be ready to present your mixture to the class and explain your reasoning.
