Let's look at a short passage together. As I read, notice how I use different tones for different characters and pause at punctuation marks. For instance, in the sentence, 'The cat jumped over the fence,' I will emphasize 'jumped' to show excitement. After reading, we will discuss how the tone changes the meaning of the text.

In small groups, each student will take turns reading a short story aloud. As you read, focus on your fluency and expression. After each reading, the group will discuss how the reader's tone affected their understanding of the story. Use the following questions to guide your discussion: What emotions did the reader convey? How did the punctuation help you understand the pauses?

Now it's time to practice writing! Write five sentences about your favorite animal. Make sure to use correct punctuation, including capital letters at the beginning and full stops at the end. After writing, read your sentences aloud to a partner, focusing on your expression. Discuss with your partner how punctuation changes the way your sentences sound.
