Goal setting is the process of identifying something you want to achieve and creating a plan to reach it. It helps us focus our efforts and motivates us to work towards our dreams. Goals can be short-term, like finishing a book, or long-term, like graduating from school. Discussing the importance of setting SMART goals—Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound—can help students understand how to create effective goals.
Let's say a student wants to improve their math skills. A SMART goal could be: 'I will practice math for 30 minutes every day after school for the next month.' This goal is specific (practice math), measurable (30 minutes), achievable (with effort), relevant (improving math skills), and time-bound (for the next month). By breaking down the goal, students can see how to approach their studies effectively.
In pairs, students will discuss their own goals. Each student will think of one academic goal and one personal goal. They will then use the SMART criteria to refine their goals. For example, if a student wants to read more, they might say, 'I want to read 5 books this term.' They can refine it to, 'I will read one book every two weeks for the next ten weeks.' After discussing, pairs will share their goals with the class.
Students will take a few minutes to write down their refined SMART goals in their journals. They should include steps they will take to achieve these goals and how they will measure their progress. Additionally, students will reflect on what study skills they can use to help achieve their goals, such as creating a study schedule or finding a quiet place to study.
