An ecosystem is a community of living organisms interacting with their environment. It includes all the plants, animals, and microorganisms in a specific area, along with the non-living components like water, soil, and air. Ecosystems can be as small as a puddle or as large as a forest. Each ecosystem has its own unique characteristics and plays a vital role in the balance of nature.
Letβs look at a few examples of ecosystems. A forest ecosystem is home to trees, birds, insects, and various mammals. In contrast, a desert ecosystem has cacti, lizards, and minimal rainfall. We can also consider aquatic ecosystems like ponds or oceans, which support fish, algae, and other water-dwelling organisms. Discussing these examples helps us understand how different organisms adapt to their environments.
As a class, we will create a vocabulary chart related to ecosystems. Words like 'habitat', 'food chain', 'biodiversity', and 'adaptation' will be added. Each student will choose one word, research its meaning, and prepare to explain it to the class. This activity will help reinforce our understanding of key concepts in ecosystems.
For this mini-project, each student will create a model of their own ecosystem using materials from home or the classroom. They should include at least three different organisms and describe how they interact with each other and their environment.
