The elements of art are the building blocks used by artists to create a work of art. These elements include line, shape, form, space, color, value, and texture. Each element plays a crucial role in how we perceive and interpret art. For example, lines can be straight or curved, and they can convey movement or emotion. Shapes can be geometric or organic, and they help to define objects within a composition.

Let's take a look at Vincent van Gogh's 'Starry Night'. In this painting, we can identify several elements of art. The swirling lines create a sense of movement in the sky, while the bold colors of blue and yellow contrast sharply, drawing the viewer's eye. The shapes of the trees and buildings are simplified, allowing the viewer to focus on the emotional impact of the piece. Discussing these elements helps us understand how Van Gogh expressed his feelings through art.

In small groups, students will choose an artwork they admire and identify at least three elements of art present in it. Each group will present their findings to the class, explaining how these elements contribute to the overall effect of the artwork. Encourage students to use the vocabulary discussed in the lesson, such as 'contrast', 'composition', and 'texture'. This collaborative effort will help reinforce their understanding and encourage peer learning.
